Tankwa Karoo – Exploration trip – Hammelhoek

At the end of November I will be hosting a landscape photography workshop / trip in the Tankwa Karoo. The Karoo has always fascinated people and there has been many people that went to live and farm in the Karoo, but this place is not for the feint hearted. Its a place of extremes, its either so hot that it feels like the only thing separating the Karoo from the fires of Hell is a broken old barbed wire, and in the winter it feels like that same hell has frozen over. So its either scorching hot or freezing cold. Yet, people have always wanted to live here, the solitude is almost frightening and you can literally hear yourself think. If it is not for the far of bleet of a sheep or the rustling of an afternoon breeze, it is dead quiet. At night the stars is so close you can almost touch them, it is actually mind boggling. There are many old ruins close to the road of the early farmers that simply could not make the harse life that the Karoo offers and they have simply abandoned their farms. Now lots of the Karoo belongs to people who either use it as a weekend get away or as guest farms. It is one one of these farms that we are planning to host the workshop. Hammelhoek Private Game Reserve is about 80km south of Calvinia, now that is as the crow flies and that is pretty much how straight those open roads are. The one thing when you arrive in the Karoo is that your first instinct is, "what the hell are we going to photograph?" Well actually once you are out there between the shrubs you start seeing a new world. There are LOTS to photograph and on Hammelhoek there is even more. They have a healthy population of some game that can also be hunted. Springbok, Eland, Zebra, Wildebeest and Impala are some of them. In the evenings they come up right close to the cottages to drink and its amazing to listen to them and their friendly chatter. On our trip it was full moon, so we did not have the pleasure of shooting the super bright Milky way, well not yet anyway. Our workshop is scheduled to be over a new moon weekend so it will pitch black dark when we are there! Well, that is enough from me now, go and have a look at the images from our trip and check out the short video clip we made about the trip. It should give you a good idea about the Karoo. Enjoy, and please feel free to give this post a share. Regards. Opstal Wedding – Rawsonville – Cameron & Kerry-Ann

Finally I can upload the images of this awesome couple. Cameron and Kerry-Ann decided that they don't want to do the big glamorous wedding, they wanted it more intimate with close family and friends, so they decided to get married in court. Now, just like the previous wedding, I like different. Different challenges me to shoot something different. On this day, it was one of those typical cold mid September days, but with some lovely breaks in the clouds. They had their small reception at the Opstal  Wedding venue just outside Rawsonville and it was just great. Well here is some of the images of their day, please feel free to let me know what you guys think of it.

Model Portfolio Shoot – Liaan Ferreira AKA Modern Day James Dean

I got contacted by Liaan a couple of weeks ago to do his new updated model portfolio shoot for him. Liaan is a talented actor and model with D&A Model management in Cape Town. He had such a cool idea, he wanted to do the whole James Dean vibe and man did he go all the way with it. From the leather jacket, the hair style and he even arranged a Triumph bike to round of the look. I decided to do this shoot as basic as possible and puch my creative limits, therefore I only took 4 lenses with me on this shoot, no flashes, no stands nothing, just myself and the camera and Liaan. To say that we are very happy with the images is an understatement! Please feel free to have a look and if you like it please just leave a comment or share it with someone who you think would love it.

Powder Photoshoot – Dance and Ballet – Simone Botha

What happens when a photographer(thats me) and a professional Ballet Dancer get together with some studio lights and 5kg of cake flour? EPICNESS!!! Yes that is right! We set up this Powder photoshoot as part of the company image for a friend of ours who will be launching her new Biokenetics business and the theme behind her company is Balance, so what better for that than a pro ballerina! This whole shoot took just about a day, the set up time was close to 3 hours, the actually shoot was about 2 and a half hours and then the clean up...man what a mess, that took another 3 hours to do! Well I think you guys will agree, the images is amazing! Please do not forget to follow Simone on her social media sites, her BLOG and her Facebook page , this girl is going places and as she has already been crowned Miss Deaf SA, it can only get better.   Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot Ballerina using flour in a dust and dance photoshoot

Riebeeck Kasteel Engagement Shoot – Hendri & Shelley

I am super excited about this wedding for next year! It is just easy to get good images with great subjects, and Hendri and Shelley are very good subjects. Game for anything and just super easy to work with. Their wedding will be in the stunning little town of Riebeeck Kasteel. I hope everyone enjoys the images as much as I enjoyed taking them, even though we got eaten alive by the midges hehehehe. Please feel free to share or leave a comment.

Matjiesfontein Wedding – Niel & Sonika

I have said it before and I will keep on saying it. There is no better place than Matjiesfontein to photograph a wedding. The history, the atmosphere and just everything is simply amazing. I have been lucky that this is my third shoot at Matjiesfontein and it simply never disappoints. When Niel and Sonika contacted me to photograph their wedding and told me it was going to be in Matjiesfontein, I was sold! To top all that excitement, the fact that the whole wedding was going to be a bit "different" just made it even better. I have always been a fan of different. Everyone does the same old stuff, the same old decor, flowers, dress etc, look not that it is not pretty and perfect for your day, but why would you want to carbon copy the previous brides decor? Anyway, Sonika wore a black wedding dress! Yes, black, Niel was dressed in great suit. I must say, I was a tad sceptical about the black dress but once she had it one, it was just perfect! It fitted in with the whole theme! Well, I can go on all day about this stunning place and the great light and all that, but just to say, Niel and Sonika, you guy where champs and I am sure you guys are going to love the images ;) Please let me know what you guys think.

Model Portfolio – Lourens Bodyscaping

I did this shoot recently for a good friend of mine. She will be using these images for her new website and company profile. I got Lourens in to do the modelling and he then also used this to update his Model Portfolio. I think the dark edgy look worked great! Let me know what you guys think.
